Two doctors at the surgical ward at the Al Bashir Government Hospital were admitted for treatment on Tuesday after being assaulted by relatives of a female patient, and were listed in a fair condition.
Hisham Al Fityani, an official at the Jordan Medical Association said the attackers had refused the doctors’ orders to stand in line and began smashing the ward’s furniture and attacking staff before fleeing.
He said the association had been following up on the latest assault on medical staff with the syndicate’s lawyer in order to take the necessary legal action, demanding the stiffest possible punitive measures to be taken against the perpetrators.
Fityani called on the health ministry to demand that security personnel be stationed at medical facilities to help stop such attacks and deal with perpetrators.
On Thursday, medical staff staged a sit-in for one hour at government-run hospitals to protest a marked rise in attacks against on-duty doctors this month, in which some 12 attacks at medical facilities across the country were recorded.
