At least seven people were killed and one was missing in flash floods in northern Vietnam that were triggered by heavy rain over the past four days, authorities said Monday.
Among the dead were three people who were killed by landslides and three others who were swept away, the Central Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention and Control said in a report, cited by the (dpa).
The report also said that four people had been injured.
Torrential rain damaged 19 houses, and more than 500 hectares of rice, the Committee said.
Heavy rains have hit six northern provinces over the past four days, with rainfall measuring between 167 and 301 millimeters.
Prolonged rain in the region, which had already absorbed too much water during Typhoon Nida earlier this month, caused landslides on many roads, holding up traffic for hours.
The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting warned that more rains and floods would hit the area in the coming days, with rainfall ranging from 70 to 200 millimeters.
Vietnam loses between 1 and 1.5% of its gross domestic product every year due to natural disasters, the Vietnamese government said.
