Forty people, most of them teenage girls, were killed after a fire tore through a youth home in San Jose Pinula, Guatemala.
Nineteen female residents of the home, all between 13 and 17, died at the scene, the country’s National Civil Police told reporters.
Twenty-one others died at hospitals in Guatemala City, according to the Guatemalan Ministry of Health and hospital officials.
The fire left many others injured.
Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales stated that the director of the home was fired and pledged his support to the families of the victims and to the wounded.
An investigation into the fire has been ordered.
