A huge blaze damaged at least six buildings, three of which collapsed completely, in Jeddah's historic centre on Tuesday, forcing occupants to evacuate, an Arab News report said.
According to Saudi Press Agency (SPA), more than 12 Civil Defense fire-fighting and rescue units rushed to the scene and evacuated people from buildings and nearby areas.
SPA quoted Sami Nawar, historic area municipality chief, as saying that the fire hit the historic buildings of Al Ashmawi House, Al Qamsani House and Abdul Al House. Nearly 80 per cent of the fire has been extinguished, he said, adding that there is widespread fear about an imminent collapse of Al Qamsani House.
No casualties were reported, while the authorities were trying to ascertain the cause of the fire.
