The Sharjah Police on Monday arrested a 34-year-old Asian driver for being involved in a hit-and-run accident that killed an eight-year-old Asian boy who was playing on a street in Al Sabkha residential area.
On Monday evening, the police operations room received a call about the accident, and a police patrol team, ambulance and traffic experts rushed to the site and took the boy to the Al Kuwaiti Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The police found that the driver had fled the scene after the accident.
Major Mohammed Al Allai, director of the Traffic and Patrol department at Sharjah Police, said that the driver was arrested within three hours of the accident. Even though the car was not identified when the accident took place, a search and investigation team was formed to identify the car and driver involved.
During the investigation, a witness provided a partial licence plate number that led them to the vehicle. The driver was arrested and taken to the Wasit police station. The case has been referred to public prosecution.
Major Al Allai urged parents not to allow their children to play on public streets and warned motorists to adhere to the traffic law and speed limits, especially in residential areas where children are likely to be freely moving around.
