Eight Taliban militants lost their lives as a mine they wanted to plant on a road in Badakhshan province with Faizabad as its capital 315 km northeast of Kabul Saturday night went off prematurely, a senior police officer Shir Aziz Kamawal said Sunday.
"The Taliban rebels were planting mine on a road in Raghistan district of Badakhshan late last night to target security vehicles but the device exploded prematurely killing eight insurgents on the spot," Kamawal told Xinhua.
Nine more militants sustained injuries in the blast, the official asserted.
Taliban militants who are largely relying to suicide and roadside bombings haven't commented.
A similar incident also killed eight Taliban fighters in the northern Kunduz province a week ago.
