Four people were killed and three others were injured after a police officer's gun went off in Turkish southeastern Hakkari province's Yuksekova town on Saturday, the Daily Sabah reported Saturday.
A statement by the local governor's office said that the gunfire came from an armored police vehicle and the officer in the vehicle's gun turret was detained by colleagues.
The statement cited the officer as saying the gun had gone off without him touching the trigger.
One of the people killed in the incident was later identified as the nephew of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) lawmakers Pervin Buldan's deceased husband.
Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said an investigation was launched immediately and a chief civil inspector has been appointed to lead the investigation into the incident.
