EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini announced Monday contribution of USD 86 million to Turkey for sheltering hundreds of thousands of Syrian and Iraqi refugees.
The EU Commission was commissioned to provide financial aid to Turkey under the framework of supporting humanitarian action, Mogherini said in a joint press conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and Minister of EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Volkan Bozkir.
She expressed her appreciation to the efforts exerted by Ankara in sheltering refugees and meeting their humanitarian needs, affirming EU's keenness to support Turkey in this regard.
Meanwhile, EU Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn said, during the conference, that there is a chance to resume negotiations regarding Turkey's joining the EU during Latvia's presidency to the Union early next year.
Hahn expressed hope for further development and prosperity in Turkey, as well as a comprehensive agreement regarding EU values and principles to back Ankara when discussing its membership procedure to the Union.
