The declaration on Saturday of 2017 as the Year of Giving by H.H. Sheikh Khalifa is embodiment of long-standing philanthropic approach established by the nation's founder, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Director-General of the General Women's Union Noura Al Suwaidi said on Monday.
"Their Highnesses the Rulers of the Emirates showed us the way to do good to all those in need in and outside the UAE and project how the generosity of the UAE is positively affecting humanity," she said in a statement on the occasion.
She described the Year of Giving as a culmination of many initiative launched by the UAE wise leadership to serve man and society as well as promote progress, development, a spirit of volunteering as well as citizens' love for the UAE.
The initiative, she added, also reflects Emiratis' inherent sense of philanthropy, tolerance and generosity as well as their loyalty to a leadership that believes in doing good and helping people in need across the world as an established approach.
It will also establish community responsibility in all segments seen as key strategic partners in serving the nation and contributing towards comprehensive development, she added.
Al Suwaidi further praised H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union, Supreme President of the Family Development Foundation, and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, for guiding Emirati women to the path to doing good, and creating a practical approach for them to lead their families to the future.
According to the declaration, the Year of Giving will focus on three main pillars: creating a sense of community responsibility in the private sectors, enhancing the spirit of volunteering and encouraging specialised volunteer programmes, as well as instilling loyalty and commitment in the next generation to serve their country.
