"The Jewish pilgrimage will be marked this year by a strong security and military presence," Kamal Zbaa, Secretary-General of Security Forces in the southern governorate of Medenine, said.
In a statement to Tunisia Afrique Press (TAP), Zbaa confirmed that security officers have been deployed, over the past few days throughout the whole island of Jerba in order to ensure the smooth organisation of the pilgrimage.
The success of the tourist season is inherent among other things, to the success of this pilgrimage season, he added.
“Security and military forces will collaborate to ensure the success of this season,” he was quoted as saying by TAP.
Large crowds are expected to attend the ceremonies at the 2,500-year-old Ghriba synagogue.
A travel agent around 2,000 visitors attended last year.
According to the Jewish legend, the Ghriba synagogue was built around 500 BC by Jews.
