A UAE newspaper has said that the Emirates Red Crescent, ERC, well deserves the praise showered on it by Jamie McGoldrick, UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen, for its humanitarian efforts in various regions of Yemen, especially in the country’s liberated areas.

"The ERC, through its various relief and charitable activities, has been making tremendous efforts to alleviate the suffering of the local people and has largely succeeded in doing so," said The Gulf Today in an editorial on Thursday.

As ERC Representative in Aden Mohammed Al Kaabi outlined, the activities include provision of food aid, supporting the health sector, assisting with efforts to eradicate epidemics that emerged in the region due to war and treating the injured.

The paper continued, "The organisation has been helping in restoring the local infrastructure destroyed during the war, including schools, hospitals, health centres and care centres for individuals with disabilities, besides supporting the electricity sector and digging wells to provide safe drinking water in remote areas.

"This week, the ERC distributed a new batch of food and relief aid to vulnerable and low-income families in Ain BaMaabad, Al Juwairy, Al Qamary, Jalaa and Beer Ali in Rudum District in Southern Shabwa, Yemen.

"The food and relief aid distributed to villages in Rudum and its other areas were part of the second phase of the ERC’s humanitarian efforts in the district. The ERC also managed to restore the power supply in Rudum in Shabwa Governorate, after a total two-year power outage.

"The organisation worked closely with the Public Corporation for Electricity in Shabwa, as well as a popular committee of Rudum residents, to carry out the maintenance of the electricity network and address its issues. The problem had been caused by storms and lack of maintenance since the start of the coup by Houthi-Saleh militias against the legitimate Yemeni government.

"That’s not all. The ERC supplied 36,000 litres of diesel every day on a daily basis to the Shabwa Power Plant, to generate electricity for the various districts of the governorate.

"On the health front, an ERC aid ship carrying ten containers stocked with cholera medication arrived in the Port of Aden this week. The shipment is part of continuous deliveries of cholera medication to Yemen, which is being distributed to all Yemeni governorates as needed, especially in provinces where the cholera epidemic is prevalent.

"Through its noble deeds, the ERC has won the hearts of many. The strenuous and dedicated efforts of its members in Yemen are surely paying off," concluded the Sharjah-based daily.
