The Statistics Centre in Abu Dhabi, SCAD, in co-ordination with the National Programme for Tolerance, has organised a workshop on Monday to introduce the SCAD staff to the National Programme for Tolerance as well as its main pillars and the themes, in the Statistics Training Institute at the centre.
Rashid Al Teneji, Acting Executive Director of the National Programme for Tolerance, led the workshop, where he explained the seven pillars upon which the programme is built: Islam, the UAE constitution, Sheikh Zayed’s legacy, the international conventions, archaeology and history, human nature, and common values.
He further explained the five themes of the programme: strengthening the government role as an incubator of tolerance; consolidating the role of the cohesive family in building a tolerant society; promoting tolerance among youth and protecting them from fanaticism and extremism; enriching the scientific and cultural content on tolerance, and contributing to international efforts to promote tolerance and highlight the UAE role as a tolerant country.
The workshop also underlined the most important initiatives contributing to international efforts to promote tolerance and position the UAE as a tolerant country. He referenced the International Institute for Tolerance that offers advice and expert views of policies for promoting values of tolerance among nations and works with relevant authorities to instil principles of tolerance in younger generations.
In addition to such initiatives that teach the youth to uphold tolerance and protect them from fanaticism and extremism, another example is working to establish a Tolerance Volunteer Association in co-operation with the Emirates Foundation. It will focus on promoting communication among the various communities in the country on the basis of tolerance.
There is also the Mohammed bin Rashid Award for Tolerance, an event during which high-profile figures of tolerance in culture, media, fine arts and social networking sites will be honoured. In addition, there are several initiatives targeting teachers, youth, and Imams, such as the Tolerance, Co-existence, and Peace Charter, the Teacher’s Charter, Student’s Charter, Employee’s Charter, the Tolerance Volunteer Association, and others.
The workshop saw participation from the audience, with 40 employees and staff members attending, where they raised questions about the programme's objectives and plans. The National Programme for Tolerance organises specialised workshops regularly in various public and private institutions, which aim to develop participants’ skills and awareness on the concepts of tolerance and rejection of racism and fanaticism.
