Dubai- About 200 companies in Dubai will be honoured for their overall treatment of labourers and safeguarding their rights, it was announced on Wednesday.

Taqdeer award, back for its second cycle, will now include over one million workers after opening the doors for companies and factories operating in free zones to apply, in addition to construction companies.

The first cycle, last year, focused on over 280 construction companies employing more than 500,000 workers.

This year, however, the award is open to more than 34,000 free zone companies, over 9,000 factories and 283 companies, with at least 100 workers and two years of operations.

Major General Obaid Muhair bin Suroor, chairman of Taqdeer Award, said the award has been extended to the free zone ahead of the initial target of including these companies in 2019.

"The award received huge demand and a lot of interest from local and international organisations. In its second cycle, we expect it to be even more successful," he said.

"The award ensures workers' rights are protected according to international conventions and standards."

Companies will be awarded ratings from one to five stars. Those that win 5 and 4-star ratings will enjoy priority in government projects, giving them a competitive advantage in bidding for international contracts.

An outstanding worker, engineer and supervisor will be rewarded from each company with a cash prize.

Dr Mohammed Al Zarouni, director-general, Dubai Airport Free Zone (Dafza) and chairman World Free Zones Organisation, said: "The award is an encouraging boost to compete in providing maximum care and high welfare of their labour workforce who play an integral role in designing the country's future."

He added that 50 per cent of Dubai exports come from free zones, which plays major role to the economy.

Companies can apply for the award online until August 20 by submitting a comprehensive submission document, and results will be out on November.

Winners will be selected based on visits from a team of certified experts who will evaluate applications and selected best companies and factories that provide the best working and living conditions for employees.
