The international congress on ''The Foundations of Transitional Justice in Tunisia'' opened works Friday morning, with attendance notably of Caretaker President Foued Mebazaa and leader of the Congress for the Republic Party (CPR) Moncef Marzouki who will run for the presidency of the republic. The congress, attended by more than 300 delegates of the civil society, political parties, members of the Constituent Assembly as well as Tunisian and foreign experts, provides the occasion to review experiences in matters of transitional justice. Tunisia's centre for transitional justice, which is organising the congress, reckons that transitional justice is required at this stage the country is living through as "an irreversible process meant to break with the legacy of the former dictatorship and meet the urgent demand expressed by all the classes of society after the January 14 revolution to have justice prevail." The setting up of a mechanism tasked with unveiling the truth and achieving national reconciliation is necessary to establish the primacy of the law on the basis of the institutional reforms required. The two-day-works will take place as part of six workshops with the aim of defining a roadmap for transitional justice, implementing the necessary methods, determining technical resources and identifying the steps to go through to establish transitional justice as part of a comprehensive approach involving the legal, social and economic sectors as well as reconciliation justice.
