HE Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the OIC Humanitarian Funds has called for adopting a clear international model for humanitarian action to confront crises and disasters and to assist refugees and displaced people.
Speaking at the plenary session on the legal and humanitarian dimension in dealing with refugee issues, HE Sheikh Abdulaziz expressed hope that the United Nations will lead a corrective movement for the humanitarian organizations move , so that charitable activities will not be merely a reaction and will be limited to providing aid,".
He pointed out that confronting conflicts and wars is an effective treatment of refugee crises around the world. "Wars are the main cause of refugee situations in the world. Today, 90 percent of refugees have left their homes to escape wars and conflicts," he said.
Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani called on local, regional and international humanitarian institutions to adopt productive humanitarian development programs, so that the refugee will be a producer rather than a recipient of aid.
He also noted the importance of carefully examining refugee areas and the humanitarian needs of refugees so that efforts would not be in vain. He announced that the humanitarian funds are studying in coordination with donors in the Islamic world to develop a comprehensive plan for humanitarian needs in Islamic countries, adding that a meeting will be held in Istanbul soon to discuss this matter.
The session discussed the reality of refugees in the world and the legal dimensions in dealing with refugee issues, and the possible risks of the continuation of the refugee crisis.
The participants emphasized the pivotal role of the United Nations in confronting crises and wars, through the development of preventive measures to reduce conflicts , as well as urgent and rapid intervention to prevent the escalation of conflicts in the event of conflict, as these conflicts are the root cause of displacement .
