Wrapping up a visit to Geneva, Switzerland, the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’ delegation, led by Said bin Mohammed Al Fihani, met with Personal Assistant of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and Director of the Middle East and North Africa Division of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Office Mohammed Al Nesour. They discussed cooperation to provide NIHR with training programmes for the Commissioners Council members and Secretariat General Staff to boost their competencies and experience.
Concerning severing diplomatic ties with Qatar by Bahrain and other GCC and Arab countries, NIHR President ruled out the allegations of Qatar’s National Committee for Human Rights of violations of basic rights. He explained that His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa had issued a royal order to take into consideration humanitarian cases of Bahraini-Qatari families in appreciation of the Qatari people. He noted that the Interior Ministry had set up a hotline to handle such cases and take the necessary procedures to maintain the texture of the GCC family.
Al Fihani also asserted that NIHR, being part of the global coalition of the national institutions, is closely monitoring the situation to ascertain human rights are protected, pointing out that no complaint from any family or individual has been lodged with the institution so far as a result of cutting off diplomatic relations. He also emphasised the need to focus on the main reasons which required Bahrain and the other countries to sever their diplomatic ties with Qatar and work on providing permanent and practical solutions instead of wasting time on creating new and baseless problems.
