Head of Bahrain Garden Club Zahra Abdel Malik said Bahrain has achieved a quantum leap in the field of agricultural, horticultural and flower gardening.
“This culture has expanded more than it was before thanks to the directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa the patron of Bahrain International Garden Show (BIGS) and the tremendous efforts of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa that transformed BIGS into a hub for exhibitors from around the globe,” Zahra added.
Bahrain Garden Club is an international club established since 1965 thanks to the support of the Late Amir His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa and membership of citizens and residents who shared the same diligence on agriculture and its future in Bahrain. The club is a member of the UK’s Royal Botanical Society and a member of the British Florists Association, she told Bahrain News Agency.
She explained the persistent efforts of the Amir HH Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa and the club’s Honorary President in caring for agriculture that culminated in the establishment of the club and its significance. His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa has continued the same attention and is currently the Honorary President of Bahrain Garden Club.
She added that Bahraini women entrepreneurs conceived the idea to establish the club as their platform to exchange ideas and expertise and to play its key role in promoting the bonds between the members. The founding members expressed their desire to establish the club through an application that was officially agreed by His Highness the Amir.
Bahrain Garden Club has always contributed into Bahrain International Gardens Show (BIGS) since 2004 which used to be called the Flowers and Vegetables Exhibition since 1966, she said. BIGS annually awards HM the KIng’s Domestic Gardening Cup and the Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa Cup as well as the Pilot Farming Projects Cup, the Herbal Gardening Cup and the Japanese Method Florist Cup.
In 1967, the Amir became the club’s honorary president in response to the insistence of the club’s founding members. Following the demise of His Highness the Late Amir, His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa assumed the club’s honorary presidency, she concluded.
