CAPMAS
Cairo - Arab Today

Egypt’s poverty rate has increased, reaching 27.8 percent for the year 2015 compared with 25.2 percent in 2010/11, the state-run Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics said on Sunday.

In a statement on the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, celebrated every year on October 17, CAPMAS said poverty rate has increased, reaching 5.3 percent during 2015.

This can be attributed to the increase in food prices, the agency added.

It noted that the extreme poverty line stood at a monthly EGP 322 per person in 2015, while the extreme poverty line stands at a monthly EGP 482 per person.

Poverty remains predominant in rural areas compared to urban areas, according to the CAPMAS statement.
