Interim Prime Minister Béji Caid Essebsi conferred on Thursday in Washington with Republican Senator John McCain about the process of democratic transition in Tunisia and preparations for the elections of the constituent assembly. Mr. Caid Essebsi affirmed on the occasion that the elections will take place on schedule in total transparency, impartiality and freedom. Mr. McCain said for his part that he will spare no effort to convince the US Congress and Administration to support Tunisia in its transitional stage. The meeting was attended by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democrat Senator Joseph Lieberman. Besides, the PM went Thursday to the national cemetery of Arlington, near Washington where he placed a spray of flowers on the grave of the unknown soldier. A military band performed the national anthem with attendance of a large number of US citizens. The PM\'s five-day-visit is due to end Friday after a meeting with President Barack Obama which arouses the interest of many observers in view of the importance of the transitional stage Tunisia is living through and the role the US can play in this crucial stage of transition to democracy.
