The Arab League warned Sunday that Jerusalem is a “red line that Arabs and Muslims will not tolerate tampering with”, accusing Israel of “playing with fire” and seeking to trigger a major crisis in the region.
Secretary General of the pan-Arab organisation, Ahmad Aboul Gheit, said in a statement that Israel is taking the region into an “extremely dangerous turn through its adoption of policies and measures that not only target the Palestinians, but inflame the feelings of every Arab and Muslim”.
“The Israeli government plays with fire and ventures to ignite a big crisis with the Arabs and Muslims by imposing new security measures for access into Jerusalem’s Al Aqsa Mosque/Haram Al Sharif”, the Arab League chief said.
He was commenting on Israel’s installation of metal detectors and tightening of security at the entrances to Al Aqsa Mosque, Islam’s third holiest shrine, which sparked Palestinian protests and elicited angry reactions across the region.
