Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit said the inter-Arab division over current regional crises reduces the league's ability to be effective, pointing out to subsiding the role of the pan-Arab body in the Syrian crisis a few years ago after referring the file to the UN Security Council where it is being probed by only the US and Russia.
In an interview with the London-based Al Hayat newspaper in its Saudi edition in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meetings, Abul Gheit said no one talks about this file any more except for the US and Russia.
The Arab League's role is now confined to adopting stances and voicing denunciation despite the fact that he called on the special envoy to Syria Stephan de Mitsura to offer a report on the crisis to the Arab ministerial council.
As for the Libyan crisis, he said he will appoint a special envoy of the Arab League to work in parallel to the international envoy to Libya Martin Kobler.
Procedures for appointing a special envoy for the Yemeni crisis are underway as well, he added.
