Nearly 100 illegal taxis have been seized in Al Wathba and nearby areas as part of a crackdown on unlicensed activities in the capital.
The Abu Dhabi Municipality in cooperation with the Integrated Transport Centre and Abu Dhabi Police impounded 98 privately owned cars that were caught smuggling passengers.
Official said legal action will be taken against the owners.
The municipality urged passengers not to use private cars and to use only licensed taxis.
"The phenomenon, which has become noticeable of late, has serious effects on the health and safety of users of such anonymous and unlicensed vehicles. Therefore, the civic body calls upon all community members to help the municipality and the competent authorities to eliminate this dangerous phenomenon by immediately reporting whoever exercises such activity," said a municipal statement.
Officials said unlicensed taxis are not affiliated to any of the licensed taxis companies. The municipality asked the community to only use cabs that carry certified taxi license plates.
