Cairo - Anadolu

At least 16 people have been killed in deadly clashes between opponents and supporters of Egypt’s President Mohamed Morsi since Sunday, according to an Egyptian Health Ministry statement. It added that 781 others have been injured in acts of violence in the capital Cairo and a number of governorates. Eight people were killed clashes around the main headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood in Moqattam district in eastern Cairo, medical and security sources told AA. The Health Ministry statement said the eight were killed by gunshots. The Brotherhood HQ was the scene of deadly clashes after protestors surrounded the building, where scores of supporters were holed up. Protesters stormed the building early Monday and set it on fire. Four people were also killed in Assiut, 375km south of Cairo. Two were shot dead in a drive-by shooting at protesters assembling outside the governorate headquarters, while the two others died in clashes between Morsi’s supporters and opponents outside the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice party (FJP) office. A member of the Jama’a Islamiya, a main ally of President Morsi, died Sunday after being mistakenly shot by a fellow supporter in Beni Suef, 124km south of Cairo. Some 42 people sustained gunshot wounds, including seven at a critical condition, in clashes between supporters and opponents. A 16-year-old Egyptian died and 51 others were wounded in clashes around the FJP office in Fayyoum, 105km of Cairo. Another Egyptian died of injuries he had sustained two days ago in clashes between Morsi’s supporters and opponents in Alexandria, 221km of Cairo. Ninety-two people were also injured in clashes around the Muslim Brotherhood building in Tanta, north of Cairo. Hundreds of thousands of protesters had taken to the streets on Sunday to press for the resignation of President Morsi, who resigned his post as leader of the FJP after assuming office.
