With Bayern Munich having reached the Champions League final, chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has told coach Jupp Heynckes he can extend his current contract past 2013. Bayern will face Chelsea in the European final at Munich's Allianz Arena on 19 May after their dramatic 3-1 penalty shoot-out win at Real Madrid last Wednesday as the semi-final finished 3-3 on aggregate over two legs. Currently in his third term as Bayern coach, the 66-year-old Heynckes is under contract for another season. "If he wants to, he can remain longer than his contract which expires in 2013," Rummenigge told German daily Bild. Heynckes, a close friend of Bayern president Uli Hoeness, has impressed since taking charge again at the start of the season and with his team set to finish second in the German league, they can still win two trophies. Bayern play Bundesliga title winners Borussia Dortmund at Berlin's Olympic Stadium on 12 May in the German Cup final, then a week later face Chelsea for the Champions League title. Rummenigge says he does not expect Heynckes to resign should his team lift the European trophy. "Jupp is a different kettle of fish, he doesn't think like that," said Rummenigge. "Jupp is a special character in that respect."
