PLO Executive Committee Member Dr. Hanan Ashrawi visited Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia, on May 12.
Dr. Ashrawi gave a lecture at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ljubljana which focused on the latest political, international and regional developments and the escalation of Israeli violations of international law that are destroying the chances for peace and stability in the region and beyond.
Following the presentation, she gave several interviews to various members of the Slovenian press.
At the end of her trip, Dr. Ashrawi participated in a working lunch meeting with Slovenian State Secretary Darja Bavdaž Kuret in which she thanked the Slovenian government for its continued backing of Palestine and its ongoing support at the United Nations. In that context, she called on the Slovenian government to recognize Palestine in the immediate future.
Both parties discussed the deterioration of conditions on the ground and political options for the future. Dr. Ashrawi stressed the importance of multilateral engagement and the imperative of the EU to work to end the military occupation and Israel’s flagrant violations of international law and Palestinian human rights.
The meeting also focused on bilateral relations and future cooperation between Palestine and Slovenia.
