Early voting to elect the next South Korean president began

Early voting to elect the next South Korean president began at over three thousand polling booths across the country on Thursday, Korea's KBS World Radio reported.
A total of 3,507 polling stations will be available for any adult South Korean citizens who are willing to cast a ballot in advance of the snap presidential election slated for next Tuesday. People can vote at makeshift stations set up at populous areas such as Seoul Station, Yongsan Station and Incheon International Airport.
It marked the first early voting for a presidential election as the system was introduced in 2014 as a way of boosting voter turnout. In the 2014 local elections, 11.5% of all voters or 20.2% of those who actually cast their ballots did so during the early voting period.
The ratio increased to 21% of all votes cast in the National Assembly elections held last year. It is the first time an early voting system has been applied to the presidential election in South Korea. The early voting system was introduced in January of 2013.
