Andrej Mahecic, spokesperson of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR, has said that the UAE is one of the most generous funding countries to help Rohingya Muslims, who are fleeing their homes to escape from the violence in Myanmar to Bangladesh, enabling the international community to respond promptly to emergencies and to meet the needs of Rohingya refugees.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday to discuss the US$83.7 supplementary UNHCR appeal to meet the needs of Rohingya refugees from September to February next year, the Mahecic said, "The UNHCR's priority is to protect refugees and help provide shelter, as well as to alleviate the overcrowding in the existing camps in Kutapalang as the number of residents has now doubled since the crisis of the Rohingya began on August 25th."
