German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she
does not expect any significant delay in talks between the UK and the
EU on Brexit despite the unexpected result in Thursday's general election, dpa reported.
"On our side we are ready to negotiate and prepared," Merkel said in Mexico City Friday evening after talks with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.
Merkel said she assumed that Britain was also interested in sticking to the agreed negotiating schedule.
"We want to negotiate quickly, we want to negotiate in the agreed time frame," Merkel said further.
British Prime Minister Theresa May confirmed Friday that negotiations over Britain's exit from the European Union will begin as planned on June 19, even as she was dealt a crushing election blow.
The British general election delivered a hung parliament, with May's Conservative Party losing its majority.
