French authorities on Wednesday said Syria cannot go on ignoring a UN Security Council statement made a week ago concerning the violence in that country. As the violence continues, "France is more than ever determined to see that repression and violence in Syria ceases," a Foreign Ministry official said here, noting that "international pressure is more and more strong" on Damascus. The Secretariat of the UN Security Council is due Wednesday to submit a report "which will give new elements on the seriousness of the situation in Syria," Deputy Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Christine Fages indicated in a briefing. "The Security Council will continue to closely follow this situation," she added. "The authorities in Damascus cannot continue to ignore the message of the Security Council which numerous countries in the region have relayed," she affirmed, calling also on Syria "to respond to the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people".
