A member of the European Parliament on Wednesday said Jordan remains a closer partner of the European Union, stressing that the bloc is keen to expand cooperation with the Kingdom to address challenges facing the Middle East.
Speaking on the conclusion of a several-day visit to the Kingdom, head of the European Parliament’s committee on relations with countries of the Levant, Marisa Matias said the EU appreciates Jordan’s efforts in hosting a massive number of Syrian refugees on its territory and providing them with services.
She noted that she and other lawmakers accompanying her visited the Zaatari refugee camp and host communities and looked firsthand at challenges and burdens borne by Jordan as a result of this crisis.
Matias stressed that Jordan and communities hosting Syrian refugees must be supported to grapple with this burden, referring to efforts to increase assistance to Jordan in the past few years.
