The Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that his country has suspended talks with Syria and may impose sanctions on Damascus. Erdogan said in a press statement from New York that Ankara will announce its final position on the matter when the United Nations meets. Erdogan met with US President Barack Obama to discuss developments in the region, including the situation in Syria. Erdogan said that Turkey is considering imposing sanctions on Syria, a matter which he intends to discuss with Washington. \"The United States has already imposed sanctions on Syria so our foreign ministers will work together to decide what kind of sanctions we should impose.\" “The sanctions on Syria may not resemble those imposed on Libya, because sanctions differ according to the country, the people and the demographic composition\", he said. \"I have cancelled my talks with the Syrian authorities. We never wanted to get to this stage, but unfortunately the Syrian government has forced us to take such a decision\", Ergodan said in a press conference. He added that his country \"no longer trusts the Syrian administration.\" Turkey was one of the few regional powers that maintained good relations with Syria. Erdogan has accused Damascus of campaigning to ruin Turkey’s reputation. He said that he will soon visit Hatay, in Turkey’s south to inspect the conditions of the camps which house about 7000 refugees who have fled the violence in Syria.
