S.Korea Defense Ministry will dispatch ten members of the nation’s underwater demolition team (UDT) to the United Arab Emirates in mid-July. A ministry official said that the ministry received a request from the UAE in February to send UDT members to train its military, according to the (KBS WORLD). A South Korean unit of some 130 special forces is currently stationed in the UAE to help special forces there. Dispatched in January, the unit is called “Akh,” which means “brother”. The dispatch of the Akh Unit came a month after the National Assembly endorsed a bill late last year on deploying no more than 150 South Korean troops to the UAE. Therefore, the dispatch of the ten UDT members will not require parliamentary approval.
