Khartoum - Abed Algayom Ashmeag

Six people were killed, including three children, and another was injured as torrential rains caused massive flooding in North Darfur\'s Malha district. Five thousand cattle consisting of sheep, goats, cows and camels were also swept away in the strife-torn area Sudanese area. The rains caused significant damage to homes, schools and government institutions. Police Colonel Adam Amin Ismail told the state-run Sudan News Agency (SUNA) that rainfall was at104.6 mm in the district interiors and 200mm south east of the district. He added that the rains caused significant damage to homes, schools, and the police headquarters, appealing to all national and voluntary organisations to provide support for those affected in Malha. The district is located in the northeastern side of North Darfur state, about 200km from El-Fashir city, Darfur’s capital, which is adjacent to the southern part of  the Sahara desert. The area rarely witnesses rain with such high rates, with annual rainfall not usually exceeding 100mm. The region is classified as threatened by desertification seen in regions north of Darfur.
