The court presided over by Chief Judge Sameh Shaker, ordered adjournment of the case till October 11 for the defence lawyer to appear in court.
The defendant told the court that he did not see the victim while driving his car. "She was just like my mother. I used to kiss her head every day, and I can never mean to kill her on purpose," he said, denying slapping the victim on her face before running over her.
As per court records, the RAK Public Prosecution accused the defendant of five charges, including premeditated murder, slapping the victim on her face before running over her, damaging the SUV of her relative, narcotics abuse and running away from the scene.
The police had earlier arrested the man from the Al Mamura area of RAK after he had run over the woman, following which she received gruesome injuries.
"The victim, identified as D.A., was rushed to the intensive care unit of the Saqr Hospital in a critical condition after the incident. But she succumbed to her injuries two weeks later," Major-General Ali Abdullah bin Alwan Al Nuaimi, Commander-in-Chief of the RAK Police, was reported as saying.
Lt-Col Waleed Kanfash, chief of the Mamura Police, said they were alerted about the incident on June 8, at 11am. "We have been informed that an old woman has been shifted to the hospital after being run over by an unidentified driver."
Investigations showed that the accused ran over the 62-year-old victim on purpose, he added. "The suspect had even damaged the SUV parked in front of the victim's house owning to earlier disputes."
The old woman got out of her house and asked the suspect to stop damaging her car, but instead, he did not give a heed and went to his house. He got into his car, drove to the victim's car, rammed into it, and ran over the victim.
