Head of the opposition Umma Party Sadiq al-Mahdi lead a senior delegation of his party to offer condolences to Justice and Equity Party (JEM) leader Khalil Ibrahim in Id Hussein suburb, south of Khartoum. Al-Mahdi met with Khalil’s family and offered his condolences with his delegation, considering Khalil Ibrahim’s death a loss to Sudan, and stressing that his party and Ibrahim’s share one cause, which is advocating for a new regime in Sudan to achieve justice and equity among its people. He pointed out the difference in methodology between his movement and JEM, as National Umma Party (NUP) pursues a civil approach, adding “despite the difference in means, we are tied by one cause. Khalil represents a certain social force, and death does not eliminate the cause. We have to admit that there are issues in the country, and these issues will not be resolved by violence.” Al-Mahdi advised those who are pleased by Khalil’s murder to not rejoice, as well as advised those who are angry to not resort for revenge, but to rather think of finding a fair solution for a new regime that contains all, removes injustice, and meets the legitimate demands of Darfur people. Leader of the opposition Popular Congress Party, Dr. Hassan al-Turabi, was the first to offer condolences to Khalil’s family, whereas several leaders of the party denied that Khalil Ibrahim led the armed wing of the Popular Congress.
