Over two decades after the legendary era of He-Man and neon spandex, David Sandberg and his Laser Unicorns production team have successfully created -- and released -- the ultimate '80s action film Kung Fury.
The Kickstarter-funded short film, now available for viewing online for free, features all the action novelties of the time including dinosaurs, awesome kung-fu moves and an out-of-this-world plot. It debuted at Cannes this month, and feedback has been enormously positive.
The brooding hero of the story, Kung Fury (played by Sandberg), is an everyday Miami cop who gains supernatural powers through a series of extremely specific events which happen at exactly the same time. After watching his partner get sliced in half, Fury gets struck by lightning and bitten by a venomous cobra to become "the chosen one" just in time to fight off a kung-fu-fighting criminal.
From then on, Kung Fury sets off back in time -- with the help of "the best hacker in the world," Hackerman -- to kill Adolf Hitler (A.K.A. martial arts master Kung Führer).
Complete with heavy special effects, edgy fashion and historically inaccurate time-hops, Kung Fury is sure to satiate everyone's nostalgia for the trend-ridden '80s-action film genre. Talks of creating a feature-length version of the 30-minute ode to the decade is in the works, according to the project's Kickstarter page, but will require $1 million in donations.
Another notable mention is the film's theme song, another '80s-inspired tune by none-other than the era's icon: David Hasselhoff. The song, "True Survivor," nods to Kung Fury with Hasselhoff at the helm, sporting the fashions of the age, and, of course, scantily-clad viking ladies.
