The coordinating team of the Panorama of the European Film, a festival of films held in Cairo, has announced that the screenings of The Square, the highly anticipated award-winning documentary following activists in the Egyptian revolution, directed Jehane Noujaim, have been cancelled. According to the team, the film will not be screened for technical reasons. The Panorama organizers released the following statement: "We apologize for not being able to screen The Square during the 6th edition of the Panorama of the European Film. We have been working very hard to give the film an Egyptian premiere. Getting the permit to screen the film was very difficult and although we were granted authorization the producers of the film wanted to take the time to work on a wholly Arabic translated version for the Egyptian audience rather than screening the film in it's international version. This was however not completed and shipped on time." Instead of the 6.30pm showing Thursday, Alam Laysa Lana (A World Not Ours), a documentary on Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon, will be screened. The midnight slot will show the Spanish silent production of Snow White, Blancanieves. The Academy Awards announced this week that The Square is shortlisted among 15 other documentaries for the 2014 Oscar Award for Best Documentary. The film already won awards at the Sundance Film Festival and Toronto Film Festival in 2013. Source: Ahram Online
