The "Ghostbusters" crew may have rooted out New York's supernatural but failed to overpower the city's furry critters, who topped the box office once again.
"The Secret Life of Pets" grossed an impressive $50.8 million in its second weekend, according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations, bringing its total US profits to $203.4 million.
The Illumination-produced animated comedy chronicles the journey of two pet dogs let loose in New York, featuring the voices of comedian Louis CK and actor Eric Stonestreet.
The controversial "Ghostbusters" reboot took $46 million, a solid debut considering the social media backlash the film weathered prior to its release.
The resurrection of the 1984 original boasted female leads including Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon, a casting decision that fueled significant internet misogyny.
"The Legend of Tarzan," starring Alexander Skarsgard and Margot Robbie, slipped down to the number three spot, making $11.4 million.
Pixar animated comedy "Finding Dory" drifted down to fourth place, hauling in $11.3 million.
The popular fish tale, which floated on top of the charts for weeks, did become the highest-grossing animated film ever, making $445.7 million thus far.
The debaucherous brothers of "Max and Dave Need Wedding Dates" pulled off fifth place, bringing in $7.7 million.
Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were:
-- "The Purge: Election Year" ($6.2 million)
-- "Central Intelligence" ($5.4 million)
-- "The Infiltrator" ($5.3 million)
