Marvel action flick "Ant-Man" kept its perch atop the US box office over the weekend, edging out retro videogame comedy "Pixels" in North American ticket sales, industry data showed Monday.
Starring Paul Rudd as superhero Scott Lang, "Ant-Man" pulled in more than $24.9 million, less than half what it took in its opening last week.
"Pixels," in which star Adam Sandler fights off a videogame-inspired alien invasion, made it to the number two spot its first weekend out with a $24 million take, according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations.
Pushed down a notch to third place was animated comedy "Minions," a prequel to "Despicable Me" featuring three tiny mischief-making creatures.
It reaped just over $22.9 million its third week in theaters.
"Trainwreck," a bawdy romantic comedy starring Amy Schumer, dropped to fourth its second weekend in theaters, bringing in nearly $17.3 million.
"Southpaw," starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a boxer at the end of his bruising career, made its debut over the weekend, with a respectable $16.7 million box office take that put it in fifth place.
Also making its debut was sixth place "Paper Towns," a road trip mystery movie based on the young adult novel by John Green, which made $12.7 million.
The Disney animated flick "Inside Out" slipped to seventh, netting $7.4 million its sixth week in North American theaters.
"Jurassic World" continued pulling in moviegoers, scoring another $7.2 million for eighth place on its seventh weekend for a cumulative total of $624.1 million.
Worldwide, it has pulled in more than $1.522 billion to become the third biggest global hit of all times, according to Exhibitor Relations.
Rounding out the top 10 were "Mr Holmes," starring Ian McKellen as an aging Sherlock Holmes, which advanced to ninth place with $2.9 million in ticket sales, and sci-fi action flick "Terminator: Genisys," which brings back Arnold Schwarzenegger in the title role, in tenth at $2.4 million.
