During an interview with E!, Hayek expressed criticism of Donald Trump for his disparaging comments about Mexican immigrants.
Hayek was talking to E! about her newly premiered animated film, The Prophet when she began providing her perspective on Trump's media blitz. She explained that she is aware of his lust for publicity and that she's sure he would say anything just to attract attention. Hayek added that she would be surprised if he did anything "courages and meaningful" but refused to tell anyone about it. However, she concedes that his controversial comments have brought to light the "real problem[s]" of race and discrimination.
Hayek's film is an adaptation of a book by the same title written by author Kahlil Gibran. It will be in theaters throughout New York and Los Angeles on Aug. 7 and is slated for a national release later that month.
Hayek produced the movie and stars in it alongside Quvenzhané Wallis and Liam Neeson. The film is split up into eight segments, each of which were overseen by eight different directors. It combines music, poetry and art to talk about topics such as love, death, children and parenting.
The film compelled Hayek's seven-year-old daughter Valentina to write a poem about human beings. In it, she wrote that "we are spirits and nothing can incarcerate us ... we are eternal."
