Acupressure is an ancient Chinese therapy practiced over thousands of years. Acupressure is applying finger pressure on a definite pressure point or area to remove the obstruction in the meridian channel through which the life energy (chi) circulates.
Dr Nazir Tarafdar, one of the oldest acupressure practitioner in Oman, has been treating patients at Al Harub Medical Centre for 17 years. Talking about the cases that are specific in Oman Dr Nazir says that he found cervical neck pain and lumber back pain being the most common ailments among the patients here although there are a significant number of patients who suffer from joint pain, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, golfers’ elbow, sports injuries, arthritis, and more.
“The reasons are our lifestyle, over uses of smartphone, computers, lack of exercise, overweight, and bad posture,” says Dr Nazir. “Rehab treatment like post stroke or post surgery are also treated through acupressure,” he adds.
Dr Nazir says that a session of acupressure therapy takes about half an hour. However, it takes about 3 to 10 sessions to treat an ailment depending on severity. During the treatment various acupressure points are pressed to release a trapped nerve or to release a sore muscle. Stretching exercise and some soft manipulations are also part of the treatment.
Dr Nazir says that acupressure is a completely safe treatment as it has no side effects. “It’s a non invasive treatment and no drugs are used. The ailments diagnosed at an early stage can be cured by acupressure. However some chronic disease like arthritis, asthma, migraine can also be successfully treated in due course.
