The leading academic hospital of Gulf Medical University (GMU) unveiled plans for major infrastructure expansion in 2017-18 to usher medical excellence, in line with the UAE’s Vision 2021, in an event on Thursday. Humaid Al Qutami, Chairman of the Board and Director-General of the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), inaugurated the event in the presence of Thumbay Moideen, founder president, Thumbay Group, Akbar Moideen Thumbay, vice-president of the Healthcare Division, and other members of Thumbay Group Board.
One of the highlights of the expansion is the launch of a new Ortho Spine Centre at the Thumbay hospital in Al Ghusais.
Speaking about the expansion plans for Thumbay Hospital Dubai, Moideen said, “Scheduled to be completed in 2018, the expansion project will add 100 more beds to the hospital, in addition to 45 new clinics and five new centres of excellence which will include Diabetes, Mother and Child care, Heart and a Cosmo Curve Centre.”
Moideen further stated, “In the coming future, the dental hospital in Dubai will offer free treatment to patients as part of their academic plan.”
Elaborating on Thumbay Group’s strategic plans for the health care division, Moideen added, “We are pursuing an ambitious global expansion plan, according to which the Thumbay academic hospital network will have a total of 1,000 beds in the UAE, 1,500 beds in India and 750 beds elsewhere in the Gulf and Africa by 2022, taking the total number of hospitals to 15 worldwide.”
The newly opened Ortho Spine centre will offer expert care in the following areas: total joints replacement and revision, arthroscopic surgery, sports-related injuries, paediatric orthopaedics, orthopaedic fractures and trauma (adults and children) and spinal surgeries. Equipped with trained surgeons, who specialise in orthopaedics and spine procedures, the specialised centre also offers outpatient services. Orthopaedic services including surgical procedures are provided 24X7 throughout the year.
Akbar Moideen added: “The Ortho Spine centre has expert physicians specialising in the diagnosis and management of spinal disorders — ranging from a simple back sprain to complicated deformities or spine tumours. Our expert surgeons have many years of experience administering procedures for the treatment of various spinal disorders, We are confident that Ortho Spine will make world-class spine care more accessible for patients in the UAE.”
He also elaborated on many such centres to be set up under the Thumbay health care system. “Across all our hospitals, we will bring together highly skilled professionals and the latest advancements in medical technology. They will be developed into centres of excellence in various specialities, providing quality care.”
