A regional conference on healthcare in places of detention, organised by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in cooperation with the Jordan Medical Association kicked off in Amman on Sunday.
Health Minister Mahmoud AL Shayyab said in remarks during the opening ceremony that Jordan attaches utmost attention to reform and rehabilitation centers and their inmates out of its belief in human rights and commitment to international agreements and charters.
He added that the Health Ministry, in cooperation with concerned departments, provides health care to the inmates through clinics that work around the clock.
The minister also praised cooperation with the ICRC mission in Jordan that provides support to the ministry to enable it to perform its duties.
The conference is attended by representatives of medical associations from Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania.
The three-day event will tackle challenges facing health care personnel, the role of doctors in places of detention, among other issues.
