The General Directorate for National Security undertook security operations during the months of January and February 2017, to fight drug trafficking and the proliferation of psychotic substances.
The operationsduring these two months resulted in the confiscation of 230,914 Ecstasy tablets. These seizures represent about half of the amount seized in 2016, according to a statement from the (GDNS).
According to the same source, this increase in the amount ofecstasy confiscated is explained by the intensification of surveillance and increased border controls, as well as the training of police dogs to detect these kind of drugs.
In the fight against the flow of these drugs into the country, the GDNS have arrested 57 drug dealers involved in 35 cases of international ecstasy trafficking. During the previous year, 240 suspects were arrested in 146 cases.
Scientific experts involved in the investigations highlight that ecstasy, being a synthetic drug made of dangerous chemicals, is manufactured in clandestine laboratories in some European countries before being sent out to other countries, including Morocco.
The General Directorate for National Securityintends to strengthen secure control measures to stand against any kind of trafficking of ecstasy from abroad. The GDNS has also intensified their interventions and expanded the dismantling of trafficking operations in close co-operation with various law enforcement agencies such asthe international criminal police organization, Interpol..
