A Dubai surgical team cured a 32-year-old Emirati woman of a chronic condition affecting her voice with the help of a piece of equipment never used in the UAE before. The new device means the surgeons can avoid using laryngeal tubes, which obscure their vision during treatment. It involves the use of a thin catheter with a diameter of 3mm to help the patient breath through an artificial ventilator. As a result the patient is able to speak directly after the operation without a recovery period. Transferred cases Hospital director Ahmad Al Khadeem said the case was one of a number transferred from the northern emirates, this one from Al Fujairah Hospital. Out of the 100 monthly cases about 20 require surgery. Al Khadeem lauded the efforts of the ENT medical team and their use of cutting edge techniques in the interest of patients.
