US President Donald Trump's controversial pick to lead the US Department of Education was confirmed by the US Senate in the narrowest confirmation vote in history, 51-50.
Vice President Mike Pence had to be summoned to the Capitol to cast the tie-breaking vote in his role as president of the Senate. It was the first time that has ever happened in vote on confirmation, the Senate historian said. Most cabinet-level positions that require Senate confirmation receive overwhelming support.
Betsy DeVos, a billionaire Trump supporter, was confirmed though Democrats said she displayed a deep lack of knowledge regarding education issues, and had business conflict of interests.
DeVos is committed to privatizing US public education, a position many Democrats oppose. She is the sister of Erik Prince, who founded the Blackwater private security firm.
