The 25th edition of the Sharjah Theatre Days Festival was officially opened yesterday by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, in the presence of H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Salem bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, at Sharjah's Cultural Palace.
The festival's opening speech was given by Abdullah Mohammed Al Owais, chairman of the Sharjah Culture and Information Department, who said that since its launch in 1984, the festival had been enriching the Emirati theatre. He also highlighted its role in the Emirati cultural life.
Al Owais said the festival shows will open with an award-winning drama by a Palestinian theatre company.
Following the speech, Sheikh Sultan honoured artists from the UAE, Kuwait and Palestine in recognition of their contributions to the Arab theatre movement.
This year's festival will feature six Emirati shows by theatre groups from Sharjah, Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, Kalba and Dibba Al Hosn.
