H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, UoS, has stressed the importance of scientific research methods in serving the community and humankind.
Sheikh Sultan said that these methods should be a means to communicate with prestigious universities in scientific research to help follow the right path.
He added that when Europe wanted to achieve progress and emerge from the darkness, it sought the help of the Arabs and Muslims. When reading about the history from that era, "we feel proud that we have roots and that we belong to Islam, the instrument of enlightenment that led Europe out of darkness."
Sheikh Sultan made these remarks while attending the UoS Alumni Association’s annual ceremony, held at Al Jawaher Reception and Convention Centre on Wednesday.
He said that UoS is among the universities attempting to be at the forefront and that the right means to develop it should be provided. He went on to say that UoS graduates have proven to be highly qualified in their endeavours in the work market and this reflects positively on the position of their university. He further said that since universities’ progress is measured by scientific research, they have developed students but lingered behind in the field of scientific research.
After the graduation of 23,000 students, he said, he believes it is worthy that the UoS has in its ranks scientists and researchers. The university needs a plan to produce more scientists and useful scientific research, Sheikh Sultan Al Qasimi said.
"We should hone the skills of the qualified graduates. This can be achieved through observing and following up students from the very first year of university study, motivating and encouraging them and instilling in them the importance of scientific research," he added.
Professor Hamid M.K. Al-Naimiy, Chancellor of the UoS, also delivered a speech in which he thanked Sheikh Sultan Al Qasimi for his patronage and support to the institution, and highlighted the role of graduates in society.
He then launched the UoS Alumni Association’s new logo, which represents its identity, objectives and vision before he inaugurated the e-services portal and the association’s smart application.
Sheikh Sultan honoured the patrons of UoS Alumni Association’s ceremony. He also received a present from the chairman of the association.
Those present at the ceremony included Sheikh Salem bin Abdulrahman Al Qasimi, Chairman of H.H. Sharjah Ruler's Office; Sheikh Mohammed bin Humaid Al Qasimi, Director of the Department of Statistics and Community Development, Khawla Al Mulla, Chairperson of the Sharjah Consultative Council, Dr. Tariq Sultan bin Khadim, Chairman of the Human Resources Department, Salem Yousef Al Qaseer, Chairman of Sharjah Labour Standard Development Authority, LSDA, Mohammed Obaid Salem Al Zaabi, Director of the Sharjah Department of Protocol and Hospitality, heads of government departments, UoS Board of Trustees members, and teaching and administrative staff at UoS.
