Her Majesty Queen Rania on Wednesday commended the Empowerment for University Women Association’s work and spirit of volunteerism. During a visit to the association yesterday, where she met with its board members, general assembly and beneficiaries, the Queen stressed the importance of an active civil society in aiding those who are less fortunate and providing opportunities for women across the Kingdom. Her Majesty was briefed by Nuha Maaytah, chairwoman of the association, on its mandate, activities and achievements, including its latest initiative for eradicating illiteracy and capacity building. The project, which is mainly funded by UNESCO, is currently being implemented in Mafraq Governorate in cooperation with several local associations. The Queen toured the association’s facilities and training areas, including the sewing rooms, and was briefed on the different marketing schemes implemented by the association to promote and sell the women’s products. Her Majesty also stopped by the printing press and computer lab, where different training courses are offered for women to equip them with skills that qualify them for the job market. The press is one of the association’s income-generating projects, which prints and designs business cards, brochures and invitation cards. The nonprofit association, which currently has 50 members, was established in 2004 with the aim of contributing to the improvement and development of women’s status socially, economically and culturally.
