HH Deputy Emir Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Thani on Thursday launched the name of the new port and immersed its basin in water at the project's site in Umm Al Houl area in Mesaieed.
HE Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al-Thani and a group of Their Excellencies ministers attended the ceremony along with accredited ambassadors and state guests.
HE Minister of Transport Jassim bin Saif Ahmed Al Sulaiti, who heads the project's steering committee, gave a speech at the outset of the ceremony. A documentary was then screened, revealing the name of the new port, which will be called Hamad Port. Another documentary showed details on the construction phases of the project until its final stages.
After that, HH Deputy Emir Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Thani signaled the start to immerse the port's basin in water by turning on the immersing machine.
At 4 kilometers long, 700 meters wide and 17 meters deep, Hamad Port can house the biggest vessels in the world. It will be equipped with 12 cranes from the roof to the quay, rubber gantry cranes to serve containers, and a number of mobile cranes, forklifts, tugboat, guidance boats and docking boats.
